“Peter Obi might return to PDP ahead of 2027 polls”

Former Borno State Governor, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, has hinted that Labour Party’s 2023 presidential flagbearer, Peter Obi, may soon return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to pursue his ambition in the 2027 general elections.

Speaking on Monday during an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, Sheriff claimed that reliable sources suggest Obi is weighing the option of rejoining the PDP to contest for the party’s presidential ticket.

“Peter Obi contested on the platform of the Labour Party, but his ultimate goal remains the presidency,” Sheriff stated. “From what I’ve gathered, it’s only a matter of time before he re-enters the PDP to seek the presidential nomination.”

Obi, who recently joined forces with other opposition leaders under the African Democratic Congress (ADC)-led coalition, is reportedly strategizing ahead of 2027 to challenge the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). Nonetheless, there is ongoing speculation about a potential repeat face-off within the PDP between Obi and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.

Sheriff also weighed in on the dynamics within opposition camps, suggesting that both Atiku and Obi remain focused on the presidency as their sole political ambition. “Atiku has served as Vice President; he’s not eyeing any other office. Obi, too, is aiming for the top seat,” he noted.

The former governor further questioned the current political capital of prominent figures such as Atiku and former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify. “That leaves Atiku and Amaechi. Tell me, which states do they actually control?” he asked.
