Peter Obi reiterates one-term pledge, says “my four-year vow is sacrosanct”

Former presidential candidate and Labour Party stalwart, Peter Obi, has reiterated his commitment to serving only one term of four years if elected President, describing the vow as “sacrosanct” and rooted in a desire for impactful, accountable leadership.

Obi made this declaration in a statement posted via his official X handle on Sunday, where he drew inspiration from global icons such as Abraham Lincoln, John F. Kennedy, and Nelson Mandela, all of whom left enduring legacies despite relatively short periods in office.

“Longevity in office is not a mark of success,” Obi stated. “It is purposeful, accountable service, however brief, that defines true statesmanship.”

Addressing recent scepticism surrounding his single-term pledge, Obi acknowledged the growing mistrust among Nigerians towards political promises, a sentiment he described as understandable given the prevailing culture of broken political vows. He, however, insisted that he must not be judged by the standard of failed promises.

“Even in this climate of cynicism, there are still a few whose actions have matched their words,” he said. “I have a verifiable track record that speaks louder than speculation. My word is my bond.”

Obi recalled his tenure as governor of Anambra State, citing fulfilled promises in the areas of education, healthcare, infrastructure, and financial prudence as evidence of his integrity in governance.

He dismissed recent jabs directed at his one-term vow, including suggestions that such a promise reflects mental instability, saying such reactions reflect more on the cynicism of others than on his sincerity.

“If making such a promise qualifies me for psychiatric evaluation, then we may as well question the mental fitness of those who framed our Constitution, which clearly stipulates a four-year renewable tenure,” Obi said.

The former governor maintained that four years is sufficient for a prepared and focused leader to make a significant impact.

He outlined key areas his administration would prioritize, including sanitizing governance, combating insecurity, revitalizing education and healthcare, supporting small businesses, and transforming Nigeria’s economic base from consumption to production.

“These are not utopian dreams,” he emphasized. “They are realistic, actionable goals that are achievable within four years.”

Peter Obi concluded by calling for a restoration of trust in public leadership, stressing that a new Nigeria is not just a hope but a tangible possibility.

“I have done it before,” he declared. “And I do not intend to betray that trust under any circumstances.”
