Nigeria’s coronavirus infection toll has surpassed the 8,000 mark after recording 229 new COVID-19 cases in 14 states and the federal capital territory (FCT).

Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) made the announcement late Monday via its Twitter handle, bringing total confirmed infections to 8,069.

It tweet reads;

The new figure comes five days after hitting the 7000 cases mark, which means, between May 21st and May 25th, Nigeria recorded 1,053 additional cases.

NCDC also reported the discharge of 48 patients, bringing the overall number of successfully managed cases to 2,311.

However, death toll also grew by 7 deaths, increasing total coronavirus casualties from 226 confirmed yesterday to 233.

Also, total samples tested nationwide have moved from 44,458 to 45,683 as at May 24th, according to NCDC’s situation report.

Meanwhile, World Health Organization has temporarily suspended the clinical trial of anti-malaria drug hydroxychloroquine due to safety concerns.

The trial was to be done to find out the efficacy of the drug touted to be a potential treatment for the virus.

The suspension decision was however made after a study published on Lancet indicated that using the drug on patients could increase their likelihood of dying through heart complications.
