Journalist Oluwatosin Adeshokan Sacked From Job Over Accusations Of Sexually Harassing Young Girls
Freelance journalist, Oluwatosin Adeshokan, has been sacked by reputable magazine, The Africa Report he worked for, following sexual harassment accusations leveled against him.
On Thursday, a fellow journalist and friend, Kiki Mordi took to Twitter to accuse Adeshokan, whose works have been published in various international media platforms, of being a sexual predator who harasses young girls.
Mordi in a series of post stated that Adeshokan pretends to be “asexual” just to gain women’s trust before taking advantage of them.
According to her, a number of women who are his alleged victims were afraid to reach out to her for help because they were worried she would take sides with Adeshokan.
She added that action will be taken against him, irrespective of her relationship with him.
In reaction to Mordi’s post, various ladies came forward on Twitter sharing their ordeal and screenshots of inappropriate chats he had with them as teenagers.
According to some of the alleged victims, he initiated raunchy conversations with them and often sent photos of his male reproductive organ.
In the early hours of Friday, September 11, Adeshokan in his reaction to the allegations penned an apology to his victims.
Taking full responsibility for his behaviour, he stated that he deeply regrets those conversations and hoped they go away with time.
He wrote;
I’m honestly and truly sorry for everything I did. I rationalised it in my head by thinking it was sexual banter. It wasn’t. I made people uncomfortable. I’m honestly and truly sorry. I know this it too little too late and I was caught and this seems like I’m trying to save face.
I’m sorry for making everybody feel uncomfortable. I will like to sincerely apologise to anyone and everyone that I have had inappropriate conversations with in the past. I’m particularly sorry because I had the trust of the women and my friends.
Adeshokan added;
I know that nobody owes me forgiveness or even the work that comes with me trying to do better. But, I really am honestly sorry and I am trying to do better.
I have been reaching out in private to some of the people I’ve been inappropriate with. I also understand that waiting until now to do this betrays what I’m saying.
I know nothing I ever say will make it right, but I promise to do better now and moving forward.
However, few hours after his public and private apology, a respected magazine, The Africa Report, which Adeshokan works for as West Africa correspondent, announced the termination of his contract.
This was confirmed in the below statement;
