#EndSARS: ‘Recent Events In Nigeria Are A Human Rights Crisis’ – Formula 1 Racer, Lewis Hamilton
British Formula 1 racer, Lewis Hamilton has thrown his weight behind the fight against police brutality and extra-judicial killings through #EndSARS across Nigeria.
This comes as the movement continues to draw more international attention even after the suspension of physical protests in Nigeria due to the brutal killing of unarmed protesters at Lekki toll gate in Lagos state on Tuesday.
It would be recalled that the peaceful protesters had remained at their protest ground few hours after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu imposed a 24-hour curfew.
Many of the protesters were stranded at Lekki due to the short notice, while some remained resolute and continued their peaceful protests.
Unfortunately, security operatives said to be soldiers and policemen opened fire on the unarmed protest, killing at least 15, according to DJ Switch, who was a firsthand eyewitness.
Reacting to this and violent activities that followed across the country, the British Formula 1 racer in a tweet described the recent events in the country as a human rights crisis.
He noted that it is the responsibility of everyone to educate and raise awareness about tragedies happening in the world.
Hamilton, who also shared a photo of himself rocking a black T-shirt with the inscription ‘#EndSARS‘ and a map with the colour of the Nigerian flag on it, posted a link for people to get educated about the cause and sign up to demand an end to impunity for police brutality in Nigeria.
He wrote;
We all have a responsibility to educate ourselves and raise awareness of the tragedies happening in the world around us and take action where we can. The recent events in Nigeria are a human rights crisis. Hit the link to find out more #EndSARS.
